For a counter, I used www.boingdragon.com They will need to access an image from someplace with a URL, if Deviantart does that for an image, great. I used Photobucket for mine. First make the image at 120pixels wide if you want it to fit in the gadget size like I'm using. Other gadgets you might have to experiment with for the right size. Then have the image at the right size with a URL. Go to boingdragon, click on counters, then go to the bottom of their counter options to this cartoon looking dragon where it says something about a transparent background and your own image. Click there and it'll give you a place where you can upload your image. Then click where it says refresh or something and your image should come up if it didn't already. You can now customize the color and number of digits and the centering. When it's the way you want it, click create counter. Then go to your account and click "install" where you see your new counter. It'll then give you some HTML code to copy. Do that then go to your blog and choose a gadget and do "HTML" and paste the code in. Vwala... counter. Any questions gimme a ring.
